چکیده

We present a multifractal analysis of Mount St. Helens seismic activity during 1980–2002. The seismic time distribution is studied in relation to the eruptive activity, mainly marked by the 1980 major explosive eruptions and by the 1980–1986 dome building eruptions. The spectrum of the generalized fractal dimensions, i.e. Dq versus q, extracted from the data, allows us to identify two main earthquake time distribution patterns. The first one exhibits a multifractal clustering correlated to the intense seismic swarms of the dome building activity. The second one is characterized by an almost constant value of Dq ≈ 1, as for a random uniform distribution. ∗Corresponding author. Monitoring eruptive activity at Mount St. Helens with TIR image data

[1] Thermal infrared (TIR) data from the MASTER airborne imaging spectrometer were acquired over Mount St. Helens in Sept and Oct, 2004, before and after the onset of recent eruptive activity. Pre-eruption data showed no measurable increase in surface temperatures before the first phreatic eruption on Oct 1. MASTER data acquired during the initial eruptive episode on Oct 14 showed maximum tempe...

Seismic Imaging with the Mount St. Helens Node Array

The 900 instrument Mount St. Helens nodal array recorded continuous data for approximately two weeks in the summer of 2014 and was deployed contemporaneously with the active source component of the iMUSH experiment (imaging Magma Under St. Helens). Two distinct imaging methodologies are applied to node data 1) reverse time imaging (RTI) is used to automatically detect and locate microseismicity...

Petrogenesis of Mount St. Helens Dacitic Magmas

The most frequent and voluminous eruptive Kurasawa, 1983], (4) partial melting of the lower crust products at Mount St. Helens are dacitic in composition, [e.g., Grant et al., 1984; Reid and Cole, 1983], and (5) although a wide variety of magma types (basalt to formation of compositional gradients in response to rhyodacite) is represented. To address the petrogenesis of convective and diffusive...

Extracting coherent coda arrivals from cross-correlations of long period seismic waves during the Mount St. Helens 2004 eruption

[1] We computed cross-correlations of seismic waves generated by Long-Period (LP) events in the frequency band [0.8–2.2 Hz]. The data were recorded in the vicinity of Mount St Helens (MSH) during an eruptive period from September to December 2004. The time symmetric coherent coda arrivals of the time-derivative of the cross-correlation function (DCF), resulting from scattering and topographic e...

A seismically constrained mass discharge rate for the initiation of the May 18, 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption

We calculate the vertical mass discharge rate from Mount St. Helens for the first few minutes of the May 18, 1980 cataclysmic eruption using a new method based on seismic constraints. The observed seismic waves indicate that the seismic source is a series of single forces. We model these forces as thrusts due to a combination of the momentum flux of the erupted products and the pressure of the ...
